The Perfect Escape
Whether you and your partner are looking for a couple of days away to shake off the world for a while or you fancy a solo mini break – you’ll find Youghal ticks all the blocks for lots to do, ease and accessibility, quality accommodation and excellent dining. Here’s a sample itinerary of what you can expect from a two-day getaway in our beautiful little coastal haven with a big heart.
Day One
Schedule your arrival in Youghal for midday – it’s going to be a busy couple of days, so you won’t want to miss a moment. Check into your accommodation (there’s hotels, guest houses and self-catering options to choose from) and start as you mean to go on: with fabulous food! try out the ‘Best Toastie in Town’ at The Nook. Just head down cobbled Church Street and turn right at the corner, you can’t miss this characterful place!
After lunch, it’s time to experience the heart of Youghal: the Raleigh Quarter where the history of our beautiful town comes to life. Get ready to step into a piece of Ireland’s unique Medieval history – full of fascinating facts and gripping tales. A highlight must be St Mary’s Collegiate Church which has its roots in 13th century Ireland and is one of the country’s oldest churches and most important medieval structures – complete with incredible 13th century oak roof and thick stone walls.
There are two tour options through which you can learn about the Church’s evolution through the centuries. The ‘Voices of St Mary’s’ Audio Tour is something quite unique: an immersive experience which brings to life the people who have worshipped, sung, mourned and celebrated happy times in this magnificent church. The other is a Personal Guided Tour. The latter must be pre-booked.
Afterwards, explore the beautiful and tranquil Graveyard Trail or walk the 13th Century Town Walls which are the longest in Ireland. Take the time to sit and reflect in the beautiful St. Mary’s College Gardens – designed in the 1600s by Richard Boyle, the first Earl of Cork. Choose 2 images below0
Later, as the evening sets in, nothing beats a leisurely stroll along Youghal’s 1.9 km Eco Boardwalk taking in the refreshing sea air. There’s plenty of seating available as you walk, and its lovely to sit and watch the waves, or listen to the song of unusual bird species on the nearby Ballyvergan Marsh. It’s that feeling of ‘all’s well with the world.’
Then to wrap up the day with some delicious dining at one of Youghal’s many restaurants. Whether you’re looking for seafood, the best steak or delicious fresh pasta -– it’s all in easy reach.
Day Two
Start the day with a hearty breakfast, Irish style – then it’s time to take to the water! Blackwater Cruises offers fabulous river cruises from Youghal Jetty – introducing you to the history, natural beauty and birdlife of the area from the water. As you sail, you’ll pass remains of the 12th century Templemichael Castle – once a Knights Templar stronghold – Ballinatray House Estate and Gardens and the 6th century Molana Abbey. Tony is your skipper on this relaxed cruise, and as a gifted storyteller and raconteur he’ll keep you entertained throughout.
You’ll then head back to Youghal, complete with a healthy appetite. Adjacent to the landing jetty is The Quays Bar, known for its great food and just perfect for a leisurely lunch.
After lunch, you’ll get your sightseeing fix with a trip to Youghal Clock Gate Tower where you’ll enjoy an extraordinary immersive tour (just make sure you’ve booked in advance). The tour uses rich storytelling, costumed guides, fascinating audio-visual displays and a wealth of exhibits to share the history of the Tower through the ages.
You’ll see how it was central to Youghal as a busy medieval market town, understand its dark past as an 18th century gaol, and hear the stories of John McGrath whose family were clock-keepers here. You’ll also climb to the top of the Tower and enjoy a spectacular 360-degree view of Youghal Bay.
And think about it: if you can have this much fun and relaxation in two days, imagine what you could do with FOUR days in our beautiful town! We hope to see you this summer!
