From Movie Magic to Historic Highlights
Youghal is a town for all seasons – with a host of great things to do and see all year round. We’ve become a popular choice for winter getaways – long weekends and mini-breaks – providing a bright welcome break during the darker months. Here’s a few suggestions on how to spend time while you’re in town…
1. Tour our Historic Town
Take a guided tour of Youghal town or a self-guided tour after you pick up your historic town map from the Living Youghal Tourist Office. Take your time to explore the town and understand its maritime heritage, the historical events that have shaped it and learn about some of the famous names linked to the area. For that extra immersion into our history, a tour of Youghal’s Clock Gate Tower is a must.
2. Take in a movie at Youghal’s Art Deco Regal Cinema and Wine Bar
The silver screen is a great way to light up the dark winter nights – and Youghal takes this to the next level! Beautifully Art Deco in style and dating to 1936, The Regal Cinema is one of Ireland’s oldest cinemas – and many of its original architectural features have been restored making movie night a wonderfully nostalgic experience! There are two screens showing the latest Hollywood movies and old classics on state-of-the-art 4K digital technology. To add to the golden age glamour, enjoy a glass of wine or cocktail upstairs in the Regal Wine Bar and Café.
3. Swim at the Aura Leisure Centre in Claycastle
Not a sea swimmer? No matter – jump right in at the Aura Leisure Centre! The Centre has a beautiful 25 metre pool as well as a learner pool and kiddies’ pool – so everyone in the family is happy. There’s also a steam room, jacuzzi and sauna to complete your experience!
4. Tee Off at Youghal Golf Club
Dating to 1898, Youghal Golf Club welcomes guests throughout the year. This 18-hole Par 71 parkland golf course is one of the finest in Cork – with beautifully maintained greens and fairways and spectacular views over Youghal Bay. Book a round of golf here and enjoy the challenges and rewards of this famous course. Then relax in the Clubhouse with a delicious meal at the Table 8 Bistro.
5. Step Back in Time at Youghal’s Raleigh Quarter
This fascinating historic centre of Youghal tells the story of this Medieval town – from its time as a Viking settlement in the 11th century, busy commercial port and important military town.
Explore the Raleigh Quarter and you’ll see Myrtle Grove – once the home of Sir Walter Raleigh who was former Mayor of Youghal. Continue to the beautiful and serene St Mary’s Collegiate Church where you can enjoy a self-guided tour that lets you eavesdrop on the virtual family Roe as they share the Church’s history and their own family memories. Relax in the beauty of the Church’s gardens then walk the town’s 13th century Town Walls that will reward you with panoramic views of the town. Make sure you’re camera-ready!
We hope to see you soon for the very best of winter in Youghal!
