SUMMARY:The Great Earl? Richard Boyle and the Making of Youghal
DESCRIPTION:Join historian and local heritage guide Wayne Ruxton in the beautiful Boyle Chapel of St. Mary’s Collegiate Church\, Youghal\, for a fascinating Heritage Week talk exploring the life\, ambition\, and legacy of Richard Boyle\, 1st Earl of Cork. \nCentred on the magnificent Boyle Monument the talk examines its exceptional craftsmanship\, rich symbolism\, and the remarkable story it tells about Boyle\, his family\, and his rise to prominence in seventeenth-century Ireland. \nVisitors will discover how Boyle transformed Youghal through his restoration of St. Mary’s Collegiate Church and his investment in education\, trade\, and urban development. More than 400 years later\, many of the town’s historic buildings and streetscapes still reflect his influence. \nThe talk also considers the more controversial aspects of Boyle’s legacy. As a leading figure in the Munster Plantation\, his achievements remain the subject of historical debate. Was he a visionary whose investment helped shape Youghal into a thriving town\, or a powerful colonial landowner whose success came at a significant social cost? \nUsing the Boyle Monument as a lens\, Wayne will explore the history\, symbolism\, artistry\, and lives commemorated within this extraordinary memorial. The monument stands as a lasting testament to Boyle’s wealth\, ambition\, and patronage\, while also prompting reflection on the complex legacy of one of the most influential figures in Irish history. \nThis engaging talk offers an opportunity to discover one of Ireland’s greatest Renaissance monuments and to explore the enduring story of the man remembered as the “Great Earl.”
