SUMMARY:Nature Boy: A Journey of Birdsong & Belonging
DESCRIPTION:How do we protect something we do not love or understand?\nOrnithologist Seán Ronayne from Cobh\, Co. Cork is on a mission to record the sound of every bird species in Ireland – that’s nearly 200 birds. Often joined by his partner Alba\, he travels to some of the country’s most beautiful and remote locations to capture its most elusive species and soundscapes: the busy seabird colony of Skellig Michael; a native woodland free from road noise in the Burren; the corncrake stronghold of Tory Island; a solitary nest in the Donegal uplands.\nIn this sound-packed\, illustrative talk\, Seán will bring you on a beautiful journey through Irish birds\, sharing their sounds\, stories and struggles. Along the way we get to know Seán\, whose hypersensitivity to sound has proven both a struggle and a strength. At once inspiring and cautionary\, Seán’s journey illustrates the beauty and importance of sound\, and what listening can tell us about the state of our natural world\, and how it can also heal and nourish the soul.\nExpect laughter\, expect tears\, and expect the unexpected. Not to be missed – you will never look at the world around you in the same way again.

SUMMARY:Declans Got Talent
DESCRIPTION:Declan lives on his own\, but he is not alone. He wants to prove to himself and his constant companion that he has got what it takes. After years of suffering from a lack of confidence\, he’s decided to “Go for it!” \nFight2Flight Theatre’s latest offering is Declan’s Got Talent: a new dark comedy for two actors by Peter Gowen. We see Declan trying to prepare for his upcoming audition on a talent show\, but there is someone else there. And as Declan tries to silence this other voice we are dragged back into East Cork/West Waterford in the late Sixties. We follow Declan attempting to enter the Church\, cope with his infatuations and watch him triumph over this negative friend.\nThe play is on tour for three weeks in the autumn and will be revived in January 2025 at Smock Alley as part of First Fortnight Festival 2025. \nphoto by Ed Guiry

SUMMARY:The Solas Quartet
DESCRIPTION:The Solas Quartet is a Cork-based group led by Irish Chamber Orchestra leader Katherine Hunka. For their fourth NSQF tour they bring another programme full of variety and originality. Haydn’s celebrated G major quartet Op.76 No.1 is one the greats\, its playful opening movement followed by a gorgeous chorale\, a witty scherzo and a virtuosic finale. Dave Fennessy’s musical career has progressed from school rock band\, through guitar and composition studies in Dublin and Glasgow\, and on to winning numerous international accolades for his music. The Danish Quartet’s album of arrangements of Danish folk tunesWood Works has attracted a huge following and the Solas Quartet brings you two of the best of them. Smetana’s autobiographical masterpiece From My Life is always a highlight of any programme; through its four movements\, this extaordinary quartet truly conveys a sense of the span of a lifetime. \nSOLAS QUARTET\nKatherine Hunka\, violin\nMarja Gaynor\, violin\nCian Ó Dúill\, viola\nAoife Nic Athlaoich\, cello \n

SUMMARY:Jack O'Rourke
DESCRIPTION:A captivating and unique live artist\, Jack O Rourke performs his most recent album Wild Place and old favourites at St. Mary’s Collegiate Church. \nDescribed as “Easily one of the year’s best albums.” by the Irish Times\, Wild Place is Jack’s first release since 2019 and has met wide acclaim; \n“There’s a soaring\, magical quality to Jack O’Rourke’s Wild Place. There’s an almost cinematic feel to the album\, like a soundtrack to some classic Hollywood movie\, perhaps by Nora Ephron. Wild Place seals O’Rourke’s reputation as one of Ireland’s most gifted performers.” – Hotpress \n“O’Rourke is a vocalist of rare distinction. The album’s essence is to be found on Sea Swimming – a track that’s redolent of the sort of standards that Paul Brady delivered early in his career.” – John Meagher\, The Irish Independent
